Highlighted by the research conducted on behalf of Generator by Pete Jenkinson (summarised within agenda item 2) it is apparent that there is a wide spread desire for one organisation / body to provide a variety of functions for those working in the development sector within the nations and regions of the UK. While the trade bodies, under the banner of UK Music are finding a single voice it would be also fair to say that hitherto this voice, is one that speaks for its members who are largely London based. While this is to be expected due to the majority of the UK Music Industry’s activity taking place in the capital; we are facing times when the building of small music businesses in the other nations and regions is simpler and more accessible due to developments in new media and distribution.
However, there are many organisations throughout the UK that represent different geographical locations, have a range of remits and a varying amount of funding to support activity, yet they have little or no connectivity. While many of us have strong links to regional development agencies, government bodies / departments, UKTI, trade associations, funding agencies and indeed UK Music, we do not provide a unified voice that represents the common interest of us all. Therefore we do not currently make a case for the foundations to be solid enough to ensure our businesses are more productive and competitive whilst ensuring our artists and projects are commercial and credible.
While the membership of this association will be open to others it is important to establish some ground rules and direction first. This group has been assembled in recognition of remit and regional coverage, with some invitations being extended to individuals who do not represent an agency or organisation but never the less, have a commercial music development role within a region where such an agency or organisation does not exist.
